Miss Mary Rae Horn Surname as Student: HornEducation: United Colleges (Manitoba College) Graduation Year: 1926 Designated: 1929Where: Manitoba ConferenceDenomination: United Church of Canada- 1979 - Died, October 18
Mary Horn graduated from the Manitoba College Deaconess Program in 1926 and began a life time career as the Secretary for the Board of Home Mission in the Manitoba Conference Office in Winnipeg. She was designated as a Deaconess by Manitoba Conference on June 10, 1929. Except for one year of leave she continued as Secretary until her retirement in 1952.
At the time of her Designation the Conference agrees to make her eligibility date for pension retroactive to the beginning of her employment. Pensions for the Deaconesses were meager, justified by the prevalent belief that the diaconate was a temporary stage of life for young women who would soon be married. From the initiation of the Orders women had been advocating for a more just pension plan, and it proved to be the case that up to half of the women who entered the Order remained for a life time of employment.
Do you know more about this woman? Her quarter century of work must have contributed to shaping the Conference. Please let us know if you can add to her biography.
